Dr. RMLIMS Hosts Special Program Emphasizing Oral Cancer Awareness and Prevention

On World Cancer Day, the Department of Dentistry at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), under the guidance of Director Dr. RMLIMS and Vice-Chancellor KGMU Prof. Soniya Nityanand, organized a crucial awareness program focusing on "Oral Cancer." The event took place on February 5, 2024, at 12 noon in the OPD block of Dr. RMLIMS.

The program aimed to disseminate vital information about the etiology, progression, and treatment of oral cancer, with the primary goal of reducing the escalating cancer cases in the country.

Patients attending regular check-ups at RMLIMS, along with residents, students, nurses, and faculty, were the primary participants. Prof. Pradyumn Singh, Dean, and Prof. A.K. Singh, CMS, extended their blessings for this significant cause. Prof. A.P Jain, Chairman Students Welfare, emphasized the importance of cancer prevention over cure.

Prof. Shally Mahajan, Head of the Department of Dentistry, discussed the adverse effects of tobacco and highlighted how suspicious lesions could be diagnosed, emphasizing timely referrals to specialists. Dr. Abhijeet, Head and Neck Oncology, elaborated on the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and the possibilities of successful operations with timely diagnosis. Other modes of cancer management were also covered.

Dr. Padmanidhi Agarwal, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, underscored the need for regular check-ups and biopsies for individuals with premalignant lesions. Dr. Sweta, SR, provided a pictorial explanation of suspicious lesions. Dr. Jillani and Dr. Akansha from the Department of Psychiatry focused on the essential support for habit cessation and the benefits of counseling post-cancer treatment.

Patients who had undergone surgeries for oral cancer shared their experiences with the audience. PRO Nimisha Sonkar and the Media Nodal officer, along with the Media PR cell, actively participated in the program.

In conclusion, all participants pledged to cease all forms of tobacco use and encouraged their family members to do the same.
