Sophos Study Reveals 83% of Cybersecurity Professionals in India Impacted by Burnout
83% of Cybersecurity Professionals in India Face Burnout, Contributing to Increased Breach Risks, Reveals Sophos Report

In a recent report by global cybersecurity leader Sophos, in collaboration with Tech Research Asia (TRA), it was disclosed that 83% of cybersecurity and IT professionals in India are grappling with burnout and fatigue. The study, part of the fourth "The Future of Cybersecurity in Asia Pacific and Japan" report, outlined the extensive impact of burnout on cybersecurity operations and its contribution to breaches.

The study highlighted key findings:

  1. Widespread Burnout: 83% of respondents in India reported experiencing burnout and fatigue, the highest across Asia Pacific and Japan.

  2. Contributing Factors: The main causes of cybersecurity burnout include a lack of resources, routine job aspects, increased pressure from management, persistent alert overload, and rising threat activity with new technologies.

  3. Impact on Performance: Burnout resulted in 34% feeling less diligent, 48% experiencing heightened anxiety during a breach, and 36% expressing cynicism and detachment towards their responsibilities.

  4. Resignations and Slow Response: Stress and burnout led to resignations in 31% of companies, while 22% experienced slower response times to cybersecurity incidents.

  5. Business Operations: Cybersecurity burnout directly contributed to breaches in 25% of cases, slower incident response times in 22% of companies, and an average productivity loss of 3.6 hours per week among professionals.

Insights from Aaron Bugal, Field CTO at Sophos: “At a time when organisations are struggling with cybersecurity skills shortages and an increasingly complex cyberattack environment, employee stability and performance are critical for providing a solid defence for the business."

Recommendations: Sophos emphasized the need for organisations to address burnout and fatigue, urging boards and executive committees to drive change and demand accountability to enhance governance around cybersecurity approaches.

About the Research: Sophos commissioned Tech Research Asia (TRA) for this research, gathering responses from 919 professionals across Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore.
